Congrats!

Another PHX connection (2x)...

Besides Ryan coming to town from the AZ, I also want to mention to two other things going on in the southwest recently.

1st up, Grandma O'B turned 90. Happy Birthday Grandma! Sorry I couldn't make it out for the party, but I hope you had some cake for me. By the way, what were birthday parties like back in 1918?

Also, congrats to my parents on making it 30 years strong. Kirsten and I have just 28.5 more years to go. Hope you enjoyed the vacation. Here's to the next 30 years!

Weekend Update

We just returned the SNL 25th Anniversary. And while I love SNL's history much more than the actual show (that is a whole 'nother post anyway), I at least regularly enjoy the news recap. Hence the ripe rip-off.

Ballard's Finest (or Ryan to my non-SPU friends) was the main attraction this weekend. Followed closely by SRI and the cold weather. Friday night, after a day of cleaning which will help with the up coming move, Ryan came in to MSP at 8:24 CST. First stop, the Edina Grill. Highly recommend one of the 4 locations; sweat potato fries are a must. But the new tap, the Hennepin is no Stella; don't let them fool you. After that it was on to Brits, where there is a strong possibility that we met the owner...crazy old guy with a thick British accent who had a fancy for gold coins (change the accent and he could have been a leprechaun).

Saturday morning brought back memories of the other Northwest. Goonies on TBS; does it get any better! Fifty dawla bills! Anyway, then off to the Bad Waitress for a short stack. Too bad Ryan's pancakes were bigger than the entire plate. As I mentioned, the weather was terrible. I thought I could put the snow coat away. Wrong. So the city tour had to be a car, rather than foot tour. The upside is we saw both cities.

Saturday night was the SRI dinner, awards, skits extravaganza. I can't say I recommend the wings at Townhall, but the catering at the U was tasty. I also have to give a shout out to the Talcott Parsons Project. Especially Joachim; more cowbell...um...professor.

Sunday meant Ryan sleeping in for the first time in months. And finally some sun. But the temperature here is still a joke.

For weekend update....(Jimmy Fallon pencil toss)

Learning Video

This is my first crack at video. BTW, I don't think #1 deserves it.

The Kopicky is Coming

But unfortunately the nice weather is leaving. How come every time my friends visit, it's crappy weather? When Viers visited it was nasty windy; my parents-first snow of the year; Matt, Mike and Tory-very cold. And now Ryan, 75 and perfectly sunny today; 47 and rainy by the weekend.

Oh, well. I'm still excited. I (heart) countdowns, so here's how long until he arrives.

And Ballard's finest is not easily deterred. We will paint the town (red...in case you were wondering what that phrase means). Pix will follow.

Until then, enjoy a clip that Andy suggested.

Blood is not funny (usually)

Check out Kirsten's favorite video at the time (watch until the end).

You know it's spring in Minnesota when.....

1) the entire city of Minneapolis tries to fit on the footpath around Lake Calhoun.
2) the sun isn't the only thing that's blinding (i.e. winter tans).
3) you are warm, and it's not due to multiple layers of wool.
4) walking on water becomes a miracle again, not an everyday event.
5) the parkinglot mountains of snow are only 10 feet tall (instead of 15).

Thailand

The Thai food got me thinking about, well, Thailand. Besides incredible food, and, as I hear, a great place to visit, I've got some personal connections.

When I was working at a homeless shelter in Seattle I met a bunch of YWAM Seattle folks who had done missions work in Thailand (a DTS for you insiders). My buddy Rustin got me to sponsor one of the kids who lived at the mission in Chiang Mai.

I think Rusty, and his wife Lynette, are headed back to Chiang Mai this fall to continue supporting the Akha people. Check out their site. Sponsor a kid. (let me know if you can't get to the site; it might be password protected)

Here's pix of the guy I sponsor, Ahkawn. (yeah, he's the one holding the ball...of course)

(if you haven't noticed, i just figured out the linking button...so i went nuts. sorry. sort of.)

Amazing

We had some enjoyable Thai food last night. The restaurant is called Amazing Thailand. Cool place; lofty expectations. Though I wouldn't go as far as amazing, it was really good. Here's a link for the restaurant (sorry, no personal pix):

(but here's a link with pix and a much more articulate review):

Our table (Kirsten, her cohort friends Heather and Jeremy, myself) ordered a smorgasbord of curries: red, green, panang curry, and massamun. No complaints, just one question: how do they cut the carrots into flower shapes? Well actually, our waiter was kinda snooty. He gave Kirsten a hard time about ordering negative spiciness, and the eye-roll about splitting the check. Seriously, who carries cash anymore...someone please figure this out asap.

Sangria Season

After a brutally long winter, four days is all it takes for me to dust off the sangria pot. Tomorrow we will also be dusting off the BBQ season as well. Since sangria is a delicate beverage and it takes much time and careful crafting, it had to be started today. Thank goodness I got out of class tonight 45 minutes early, and thus had ample time to undertake the hard work.

Kirsten teases me that my writing is epic, so I had to live up to it again (see above). Anyway, enjoy the post, enjoy the pics, and check the link for the sangria recipe. If you have any questions on fine tuning the sangria, just let me know. Oh, and as Tory says, the key is there can never be too much brandy.

Welcome...Bryant

So it begins.

I've always wanted a blog, but I've wanted it to be impressive out of the gate. My lofty aspirations would have led to nothing. So here's a start. With reckless abandonment (big words help me feel cooler):

Another finally. Winter is over. Well, fingers crossed anyway. 4 days of sun and warmth are encouraging and refreshing. And while the last four days have been nice, today was our first chance to get out and make the most of it. So we did, with our newest friend: Bryant. Nick and Shannon got a puppy, and he's fun. Since I'm not a dog person, I don't know what kind he is. But pictures will follow.
