Homes for the Holidays: St. Paul

This year, we are going to our many homes for the holidays. Friday, we go to our Seattle home, then on the 23rd, we go to our Caledonia home, and on Christmas Day we go to our Aunt and Uncle home here in the Cities. Of course, we started out our holiday season at our very own home, so here is a glimpse into our Christmas this year. I also threw in some more pictures of the snow. The whole neighborhood was out to dig out cars (there were a lot more before this pic)
There was a group of probably 15 people that dug this car out
Can you spot the car under there?!?!
This was where our car was- Will and his little shovel won.

Merry Christmas!

White Christmas

Word on the street is that the blizzard we are having today will rival that of the Halloween Blizzard of '91. That Halloween Blizzard is legendary in Minnesota Folklore, so it is pretty crazy this one may reach such a status. The wind is what is so unusual- the snow is blowing and drifting everywhere, even here in the city! The city buses have been called back (over 70 have gotten stuck) and the U even shut down campus- I have never heard of either of these things happening. The airport is shut down, too, so the NY Giants (who are supposed to play the Vikings tomorrow) can't get in. We sure are having a good old fashioned Minnesota winter this year!

By mid-afternoon, we had over a foot, and it is supposed to keep snowing until late evening (estimates of 16-20 inches). Our apartment door was snowed shut, and it will take some serious shoveling to get our car out tomorrow. The drifts on the side go as high as the hood! Luckily, our car is parked on the non-plow side of the road, so we won't need to dig our car out until 8 tomorrow morning (when we will have to move it to the other side). We were supposed to go Christmas shopping today, but we have been watching movies, listening to Christmas music, and drinking hot chocolate instead. I can't complain!

Below are some pics: note the one of Will and Mosby with the girl in the background cross-country skiing down the road! Skis or snow shoes are needed if you want to get anywhere fast- one of the pics shows the snow hitting my knee. It is a good thing I got some serious snow boots over Thanksgiving break- they work great!

Happy Snow Day!
Kirsten

Tack vare Gud! (Thanks to God)

As kids, we always went to Willmar for Thanksgiving. I think because my dad is a pastor, and Christmas is a work weekend for him, Thanksgiving was THE holiday that brought Bengtsons together each year. We would all go to Willmar and spend the weekend at my Grandparents' house. My cousins and I would play on the lime green shag carpet (Lincoln Logs and puzzles), watch Nick at Nite, play with all of my grandpa's exercise equipment he had gathered in the basement, and eat the best mashed potatoes, buns, and rye bread you could imagine (yes, turkey as well- but my Grandma's staples were apparently in the carbs department). Then, that night the cousins would decorate Grandma and Grandpa's Christmas tree and go to a movie. We would look through the JCPenny catalog at the toys, and start thinking about Christmas. I am gathering pictures together to make a book for my Grandma's 95th birthday this year, so these memories are fresh in my mind.

This Thanksgiving was as wonderful as ever (although we missed Anne, Billy, Jean, Todd, Steve and Kirstin!). Most of our time was spent laughing, reminiscing, and ......EATING (oh yeah, and seeing Harry Potter:)! I asked Grandma for her Swedish Meatballs recipe, and she just looked at me and shrugged, and said, it's all up here (pointing to her head). I guess that's the sign of a true cook- you don't use a recipe anymore... Below are some pictures of the weekend.

Thanks for having us Grandma! It is hard to believe it has been almost 15 years since we did Thanksgiving in the big house (and with Grandpa). We all are so grateful for every memory...and bite!

Until next time,
Kirsten

Monster Dash 2010

We did it! My friends, Amelia and Joel, came into town from DC the last weekend of October. Amelia had also been running over the summer and had completed her first half marathon in September (way to go!). So thought it would be fun to do a 10 mile race when she was in town. It was a beautiful sunny fall day, and we both felt great the whole way. We kind of got separated for a mile or two, but amazingly we found each other among the thousands of runners. This is the farthest I've ever run, and I know it was made so much easier thanks to Amelia's company. We were able to chat the whole way and NOT think about the fact that we were running for over an hour and half straight. Our friends Rachelle and Andrew even came out to cheer us on at about mile 8- it really helped keep us going! People were wearing some funny costumes since it was the day before Halloween, so we were entertained along the way.

Amelia and Joel are getting married this May, so we also took them out for bachelor/bachelorette evenings. The girls went to Chino Latino's for a smorgasbord of world cuisine and wrapped up with some classic bachelorette games at Rachelle's. Will and I are so excited to head out to the East coast for the wedding!

Until next time,
Kirsten

Birthdays and Birth Days

First of all, it has been far too long since the last blog. I keep forgetting to bring my camera or take pictures when I do have it with me. We also haven't gone on any big trips or anything in November, but we did go to Nick's cabin and had a fun-filled weekend with our friends in October. I will have to get some pictures from friends who were much better about taking pictures those weekends than I was. I guess we were just having too much fun!

This weekend, Will and I celebrated his birthday a couple of months late. He has wanted to go see the Minnesota Rollergirls for a long time, so I got him tickets for his birthday:) It was a fun event and I think we were starting to understand the rules by the end of the bout. Happy Belated Birthday Will- the final year of your 20's!

I also had the privilege of meeting my friend's daughter, Kailyn for the first time last weekend! She was only 3 days old in the pictures above, and such an adorable tiny little peanut. Nichole looks amazing and was a great hostess with a house full of visitors. You would never have known she was still recovering from childbirth! What a superwoman! It was so fun to watch her and Colin with Kailyn, too. They were just so excited and taking everything in stride. Kailyn was awake the whole time Megan and I were visiting too, so we each got to spend some time with her. Megan reminded me that we have a picture of the three of us together when Nichole had gotten her first little kitten (probably 7 or 8 years ago)- and now we have almost the same picture with the first baby. It is so exciting! It will be so fun to see Kailyn grow and see Nichole and Colin grow into the amazing parents I know they will be.

With the holiday season coming up, I will have a lot of things to post about! Sadly, after updating my computer to Windows 7, though, there are no longer the same photo editing tools available. I can edit in a different program, but it is not nearly as good. I guess I will actually have to learn how to take good pictures with my camera now, instead of just editing them afterwards. So the pics in the upcoming blogs may not look so great, but hopefully I'll find a good solution!

Until next time,
Kirsten

What a Rush

Will and I have a Minnesota bucket list. Two of the things on that list were to see A Prairie Home Companion at the Fitzgerald theater downtown St. Paul, and to see Storyhill (at least) one more time in concert. When I saw that Storyhill was going to be the musical guest on PHC, I just had to get tickets- we could check 2 things off the list with 1 show. Unfortunately, they were SOLD OUT. Rush tickets were really cheap, but the website said you had to get in line between 12-2, and the show isn't until 5....and there was no guarantee that you would get tickets. I wasn't sure at first, but eventually I decided it would be worth the wait, so Will dropped me off a little bit after noon on Saturday. Luckily, they just gave you a rush number and told you to come back at 4, so I didn't have to sit in front of the theater all by myself for 4 hours....awkward.

I am SO glad we got tickets. We ended up getting seats ON stage, right behind the band. It was so fun seeing how the show is made and being so close to the action. And Storyhill just never disappoints. They were awesome, and now they have tons of new fans all over the country (they were the #1 folk album on Amazon this weekend, which is impressive for a local band who broke up for four years and got back together because their fans demanded it:). Garrison was equally impressive, with his quick wit and impeccable timing. If you ever want to go see A Prairie Home Companion, definitely get rush tickets- it is a real rush. And you will feel very Minnesotan. What could be better?

Until next time,
Kirsten

Where there's a Will there's a Way

Will has been training for a 5K over the summer, and his goal was to run a 7:30 min mile or less....and he ran 7:19! The race started at Boom Island and went over the stone arch bridge, a pretty scenic route. Will finished within the top 35 (out of 500), so his training paid off. I cannot imagine running that fast for a prolonged period of time, so I am impressed:)

Pumpkins with the Paumens

Last weekend, Will and I headed out of the city to pick some pumpkins. Will's mom grew up on a farm in Maple Lake, MN- about 1 hour out of the city. Will's uncle John has a pumpkin patch out there, and what a year for pumpkins! I don't even know how many we ended up picking, but there were way too many for us to fit in our cars. I had actually never been to a pumpkin patch, so it was fun to see them growing "in the wild" vs. at a grocery store:)

It is an even more fun tradition, though, because all of Will's cousins come out and bring their kids. They are all adorable and hilarious (Bridget told me, "I think you're Kirsten" in a very matter-of-fact manner). The kids loved the tractor rides from the patch to the house. It was a perfect day too, sunny and warm. Last year at this time, it was snowing, so we'll take what we can get!

Thanks John and Nancy for the great time!

River Quest

I probably won't ever do it. So I read Eddy Harris' trip from Itasca to New Orleans. A quick read, and up my alley, an adventure travel text.

Just finished the book today, while over looking the river itself. Cold crisp, but perfectly sunny day in St. Paul. Had to check out the Mississippi today too. Harriet Island is partially underwater now as the fall rains have led to some urban flooding.

Up next, Theroux's The Great Railway Bazaar.

Seattle 2: Family Pics

Seattle 2: Family

We were able to spend a lot of quality time with Will's family when we visited Seattle a couple of weeks ago, catching up, hiking, playing with the kids (and Chesty), and eating homecooked meals!

Dennis and Mary took us out to the peninsula, and it was so beautiful! I tell you, even though I lived there for 5 years and Will for his entire life before moving here, you forget just how strikingly gorgeous the Pacific Northwest is. As someone from a plains state, the salt water alone makes it feel so exotic and exciting- we saw crabs, whales, seals- I mean these are things that are usually in a zoo right?! But not only is there the sound, but then you are surrounded by jagged mountains on nearly every side of you (granted, you don't see them everyday because of the clouds, but when you do, woah). And I haven't even mentioned Mt. Rainier yet! Needless to say, we had a great time with Mary and Dennis on our day trips.

We also were able to hang out all together, including both of Will's brothers, a few nights. It was great to see Will's brother Matt, his wife Mary, and their kids Lily and Finn. Lily has grown up so much in a year, I can't believe it! And Finn is 3 months old, and just the sweetest baby. It is a ton of fun having kiddos around- they both provide us with endless entertainment:) It was great to see Taylor too, who just passed his test to become a personal trainer. He is ridiclously fit, so anyone would be lucky to have his advice and training tips!

It was a fabulous time, and we can't wait till the next visit!

I will post some pics above too.

Seattle 1: Friends Pics

Seatte 1: Friends

Much of the previous post about moving came from reflecting on our trip to Seattle. It was a wonderful wonderful time, and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Missing Seattle is not as raw as it was when we first moved away (5 years ago), so I was a little surprised by my sadness when we returned home. As I mentioned below, I tend to be one that looks forward to things, and I don't often long for times past (I think that's just the way my mind works), but just being with college friends and in the town that was such an important place for me, where I first struck out on my own, met my best friends, my husband, and my church family, brought me back to that time. Maybe it's because college feels like such a long time ago now, but I found myself really nostalgic for those days this time around. The early years of Will and I dating, living in a house full of girls, always having someone to talk to and joke around with and to go on adventures with, hanging out in downtown Seattle and exploring new neighborhoods and restaurants...what a great time in our lives. I think felt what I'll call "joyful pain" when I returned, because I would not miss those times and people had they not been such wonderful experiences. How incredibly lucky are we to look back and actually experience a tug of pain because it was just that good!

We were able to see our friends throughout the week at various events, one of which was my friend (and Will's kindergarten classmate) Melissa's wedding! It was a gorgeous event and it just felt so wonderful to be with good friends. They are a great bunch and I love them!

I will post some pictures above.

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Today is just that, a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Mosby and I took a walk to the new neighborhood bakery. The sky is as blue as possible, the old trees line the streets with color and frame the houses that have seen nearly a century of seasons change. The sun is warm, but not hot, the breeze cool, but not cold, and the sweet smell of freshly cut grass still lingers alongside the cozy smell of dried leaves. It is one of those days where everyone seems to recognize it's beauty and cannot help but share it with others. Each passerby greets with a hello and a genuine smile. Chatting with neighbors in the bakery of course had to be topped off with a cookie and a cup of coffee.

Most casual conversations in our neighborhood revolve around Mosby. We actually joke that while everyone may love Raymond, everbody absolutely LOVES Mosby. So he got his usual compliments on our walk along with the usual curiosity about what kind of dog he is (is it a bad sign if your dog gets more compliments than you?!). This dog has the neighborhood wrapped around his little paw.

As we are entering our last seasons here in Minnesota, I have a heightened sense of appreciation for our surroundings: our friends, family, and neighborhood. We are so looking forward to the changes ahead, but as one who so often looks only ahead, I do want to make sure I really soak in the present and recognize all that Minnesota has given us these past 5 years. I will miss living here in St. Paul. I will miss the city life, where everything is within walking distance. I will miss walking amidst the old mansions on Summit, imagining the lives of those who first lived there. I will miss running to the Cathedral and catching my breath every time at its sheer size and beauty (which somehow surprises me even though I see it nearly every day). I will miss walking to the local coffee shop where I know the workers and regulars, and where we are a little community of "work from home" types- even though none of us stay at home. I just love the Cathedral hill neighborhood, and am so glad that Will believed me when I told him St. Paul "wasn't that bad" (he was skeptical at first).

As I am interviewing people about becoming adults, I can't help to think about it myself. I feel that this is where we really grew up, and yes, I would say became adults. Our first place, in Minneapolis, we were both in school, newleyweds, and just getting accustomed to our new lives (school, friends, MN). And lets be honest, if your primary closet is located in the middle of your living room, and two relatively small people can barely fit in your kitchen, it doesn't really scream permanence. However, since moving to St. Paul a couple of years ago, we have really made this neighborhood our own, grown closer with friends, added a four-legged member to our family, bought a car, invested in our careers, and shared in many friends' joys of marriage and parenthood. As those close to us know, it hasn't always been roses and we've had our fair share of growing pains, but overall, I think it has been a special and important season in our lives. I just wanted to give it it's due. I'm sure much of this year I will be focused on what's to come, so I wanted to document my thoughts, and also to begin to process and grieve, because I am sure I will miss much of these things when we are gone.

Thanks for listening,
Kirsten

The North Coast

Will and I took a trip up to Grand Marais last weekend. We had a great time and it was nice to get away from the heat and humidity! We are really going to miss having Grand Marais so close after we move to Ohio... It feels like just yesterday it was our summer home. Hopefully we'll get up there to see the fall colors:)

I posted a couple of pictures below, but you can see more pictures here:
